Driver reinstallation for CF/CFS57U

This FAQ gives a detailed description on how to uninstall/reinstall drivers for CF/CFS57U spectrophotometers.  This is only for ColorDesigner systems version 10.1 and older.If your X-Rite CF57U or CFS57U spectrophotometer will not connect, it may be necessary to uninstall and reinstall the driver. One reason this becomes necessary is when the instrument is connected to the computer before your software is installed. Please note: these instructions and images were made using Windows XP Professional.
 
  1. Before beginning this operation you will need to have your MatchRite ColorDesigner software CD available. This is the CD labeled 'Software' showing a version number on the bottom of the CD, not the CD labeled 'Manuals and Utilities', nor is it the CD labeled 'Dymo'.
  2. Begin by inserting the MatchRite ColorDesigner software CD into the drive. It should automatically boot up to install software. You will need to click on Exit to stop this operation.
  3. Move your mouse to the Start button in the lower left hand corner of the monitor and right click on it. In the list that appears, left click on the word Explore.
  4. On the left hand side of the window that opens, look for CD Drive (D:). Depending on the version that you have it may be identified as ColorDesigner (D:), or some variation. In most cases your CD drive will be the D drive, identified by the (D:).
    • Helpful hint: when the explore window opens you should see Local Disk (C:) near the top of the list. If this has a - in a small box in front of it, click your mouse on this -. Doing so will make the list much shorter and your CD drive should then appear just below the C drive.
  5. Click on the + in from of CD Drive (D:). You will see additional folders appear.
  6. Click on the + in front of Drivers. Again, additional folders will appear.
  7. Single (left) click on the word Spectro. On the right hand side of your screen you will see all of the files contained in the Spectro folder. Here you will find a file named Ftdiunin. It has an icon that looks like a computer chip. This file is used for Windows XP (home or professional) and Windows 98. If you are using one of these operating systems double click on this file with your mouse. If you are running Windows 2000, double click on the file named ftdiun2k.
  8. A message will appear asking you to unplug your USB device (spectrophotometer). This means that you need to remove that cable connecting the spectrophotometer to the computer. You can unplug the cable at the spectrophotometer itself. This is usually easier than accessing the back of the computer. After you have disconnected the spectrophotometer from the computer click on the Continue button.
  9. When the uninstall complete message appears, click on the Finish button and close any open windows.
  10. Do not remove the CD from the drive.
  11. Reconnect the USB cable to the back of your spectrophotometer. Click on the Start button at the lower left hand corner of your monitor, then click on Control Panel.
  12. Double click on the System icon.
  13. Click on the Hardware tab at the top of the system properties window.
  14. Click on the Device Manager button.
  15. The Device Manager window will appear. Click on the + in front of Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
  16. In the list that appears you should see MatchRite CF(S)-57 USB with a yellow circle in front of it as shown below. Right click on this and then click on Uninstall.
  17. A warning message will appear, click on Ok.
  18. Close any windows that are open.
  19. Turn the spectrophotometer off for a few seconds and then turn it back on. There is a power switch on the back of the instrument. A found new hardware message will appear in the lower right hand corner of your monitor.
  20. After a few seconds the Found New Hardware wizard will appear, click on Next to continue.
  21. A message will appear while the wizard searches for the driver.
  22. A list of two drivers will appear. The top file should be highlighted, click on the Next button.
  23. A logo testing message will appear. Click on Continue Anyway.
  24. A message will appear as the driver installs.
  25. When the 'Completing the Found New Hardware' message appears, click on Finish.
  26. A second found new hardware message will appear in the lower right hand corner of your monitor.
    • If a second found new hardware wizard does not appear, go back to the Device Manager as we did before - Start/Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager. Click on the + in front of Ports. If there is a yellow circle in front of USB Serial Port' right click on it and click on uninstall. Close any open windows. Turn the spectrophotometer off, and then on again. Continue with the instructions below.
  27. After a few seconds the 'Found New Hardware wizard' will appear, click on Next to continue.
  28. A message will appear while the wizard searches for the driver.
  29. A list of two drivers will appear. The top file should be highlighted, click on the Next button.
  30. A logo testing message will appear. Click on Continue Anyway.
  31. A message will appear as the driver installs.
  32. When the 'Completing the Found New Hardware' message appears, click on Finish.
  33. Go back to the Device Manager as we did before - Start/Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager. Click on the + in front of Universal Serial Bus Controllers. MatchRite CF(S)-57 USB should now appear without the yellow circle in front of it.
  34. Click on the + in front of Ports. Look for one labeled USB Serial Port. This should be followed by COM and a number. Make note of this number. This is the port number we need to choose in ColorDesigner.
  35. Close any windows that are open and double click the ColorDesigner icon to launch the ColorDesigner software. At the main screen, click on the Housekeeping icon.
  36. You will need a password to enter this area. The default password is 1234 or 'getmeout'. Enter this into the text box and click on the unlock button. 
  37. Click on the Setup icon at the top of the screen.
  38. Click on the Instrument button at the left of the screen.
  39. Click in the box underneath Tethered Instrument Port. When the dropdown list appears click on the number you saw in Device Manager.
  40. The software will search for your instrument and establish a connection.
