Evaluating Color Without a Light Booth

Posted July 06, 2015 by Shoshana Burgett

As we’ve talked about in previous posts, proper lighting conditions are crucial for evaluating color. The best way to know you’re seeing color accurately is to evaluate your samples in a quality light booth.

But what if you don’t have a light booth available?

Pantone has solved this problem with its LIGHTING INDICATOR Stickers. They’re economical, easy to use, and the second best way to find out if your viewing conditions are right for color evaluation.

Here’s how they work.

  1. Peel off a sticker.
  2. Place it on your sample.
  3. Each sticker has two patches. If they match you can trust that you’re evaluating under proper ambient light conditions (natural daylight). If not, you should move to a different light source before evaluating your colors.

Pantone offers two versions:  D50, the standard lighting condition typically used in graphic arts, and D65, which is commonly used for evaluating color in industrial applications like product development, textiles, and home furnishings.

PANTONE® LIGHTING INDICATOR Stickers come in single sheets of 40 stickers, and can stay with the sample or color proof as it moves down the supply chain so everyone involved knows they’re evaluating under the best lighting conditions.
