Is Virtual Design the Answer?

The fashion and apparel industry began embracing virtual design years ago. Luxury brands like Louis Vuitton, Burberry, and Christian Dior have already been using the virtual world to market their brands in real life scenes. Jing Daily shared: “There is a tremendous opportunity for luxury brands to define what a luxury experience should look like in the virtual world. And brands that master the characteristics of the virtual world will engage even passive followers and develop positive consumer perceptions.”

COVID further underscored the importance of digital visualization and helped brands re-imagine the art of product marketing. According to Vogue Business, Tommy Hilfiger and Charlotte Tilbury recently launched virtual stores to go beyond gridded product pages with amazing success.

Whether your brand sells clothing, home goods, automobiles or plastic molded toys, virtual design is opening a new world of possibilities. 3D-design programs augment the creativity of designers to virtually construct patterns and render realistic 3D models for products of any size, shape, and texture.

However, many brands are still struggling to imagine how a virtual rendering on a computer screen can demonstrate how a fabric, plastic, or coated sample will react to the shape of the product and changes in environment and lighting. In their recent article Understanding Fashion’s New Digital FrontierThe Interline underscores the importance of choosing the right tools to streamline the process.

That’s where X-Rite can help with the PANTORA desktop application.

Redefining Material Specifications for Textiles, Plastics, and Coatings

PANTORA offers an easy and intuitive way to import, capture, and manage virtual materials. With PANTORA, brands and designers can preview how a certain material will look on a 3D model under different lighting conditions without the expense of a physical prototype.

Once you’re happy with your product rendering, PANTORA can digitally exchange it via a vendor-neutral Appearance Exchange (AxF) file format for use in 3D rendering software and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) Systems.

These renderings can be used by brands and designers to make fast color decisions, gain stakeholder approval, and create realistic 3D representations for use in marketing materials, POS displays, and websites.

Measuring Physical Samples for Use in Virtual Design

You can use your existing X-Rite spectrophotometer to bring Very Peri into the virtual world. Simply measure your physical sample using a Ci7000 Series, MA-T12, or MetaVue VS3200 spectrophotometer and PANTORA will use that digital color and appearance data to create a digital material twin that can be used for virtual prototyping.

  • For plastics, Ci7600, Ci7800, and Ci7860 benchtop spectrophotometers can capture reflectance measurements on opaque samples and transmission measurements on translucent materials.
  • For multi-textural and multi-color samples, the MetaVue VS3200 imaging spectrophotometer can capture and define color and appearance attributes for laminates, leathers, textiles, and more.
  • For paint and coating samples, containing special effect and sparkle pigments, the MAT-12 multi-angle handheld can measure and virtualize flake texture and color flop and verify color, sparkle, and coarseness characteristics.

The resulting AxF file accounts for appearance attributes such as color, gloss, and texture. With the PANTORA Material Viewer, brands can render Very Peri in a virtual scene to see the effect of lighting, gloss levels, and special effect pigments. PANTORA also stores the virtual color data in a library for future use.
