The presentation traced the evolution of AXF, beginning with its founding and a significant milestone in 2010 when Autodesk released a new paint shader.

AxF: The Real History

The presentation outlines the development of AXF, starting with its founding and Autodesk’s 2010 paint shader release. It highlighted the acquisition of Sensible Graphics, which brought advanced material capture techniques and the BTF shader. AXF 1.0 introduced support for spatially varying VLDFS, enhancing glossy material measurement. By 2014, AXF had evolved into a structured ecosystem. AXF 1.1 (2016) added a Decoding SDK and improved car paint rendering. In 2019, volumetric materials and spectral data were introduced, followed by color transmission in AXF 1.8 for better translucent material rendering. Spectral computations were emphasized for accurate color under varied lighting. The 2023 ISF Editing SDK enabled realistic edits to AXF files.
