Creating a Waste in Ink-Master®

There are several ways to create a waste in InkMaster®. The three basic methods will be outlined below with an explanation of when each of these methods would be useful.

  1. The best way to deal with a large amount of waste is to create it as if it were any other colorant. Make letdowns of the waste just as you did for your other colorants.  To enter this as a Waste Ink:

  • Click on Database, and then on Edit Ink, the Maintain Inks dialog box appears.
  • Select a calibration set from the Calibration Sets field.
  • Click on the Create button, the Create Ink dialog box appears.
  • Enter the waste name in the Ink Name field.
  • Select a supplier from the Suppliers field.  Note:  You will have to click on the pull down arrow and use your keyboard's arrow keys (up and down) to scroll through your options.
  • Click on the pull down arrow to the right of Ink Type and use your keyboard's down arrow key to select Waste.
  • Enter ink density in the Density field.
  • Enter your cost for the waste in the Cost field.
  • Enter a value in the Inventory field.
  • Enter a value in the Max Concentration field if desired.
  • If you are in "Light, Heavy and Concentrate" mode, enter in "99.999"in the Concentrate field.
  • If you are in either "Light and Heavy Inks" or "Light, Heavy and Concentrate" mode, enter the amount of solvent needed to reduce your waste to press viscosity (if needed) in the Solvent field.
  • Click the arrow to the left of Calibration Data and the "Edit Ink - (name)" screen appears.
  • Follow normal procedure for entering in calibration data.
  • Make sure to click on OK to save your data.

This method allows you to accurately characterize your waste so that you can feel confident using any amount in a formulation.  This is a great way to get rid of multiple wastes by combining like colors into a larger container and using it up, little by little, in everything you make.

  1. If you weigh up a formulation and make an error in weighing (i.e. you put too much black in) or it is just not a good match, you can create this as a waste.  To create a waste from trial:

  • Make a proof of your ink and measure it in as a Trial by clicking on Instrument and selecting Measure Trial.
  • Click on Database, then on Waste From Trial, the "Create Waste from Trial" dialog box appears.
  • Enter the waste name in the Ink Name field.
  • Select a supplier from the Supplier field.  Note:  You will have to click on the pull down arrow and use your keyboard's arrow keys (up and down) to scroll through your options.
  • Enter your cost for the waste in the Cost field.
  • Enter a value in the Inventory field.
  • Enter a value in the Max Concentration field if desired.
  • Click on OK.

Since you know exactly what is in this batch of ink, the computer can very accurately compute how this ink will behave.  This is a very good way to use up "off spec" inks.

  1. The last method is a quick way to generate a waste profile without having to go through the process described in step 1.
  • Make a proof of your waste and measure it in as a Standard by on Instrument and selecting Create Standard.

  • Name the waste as such, i.e. "Waste Red" by entering it in the Standard Name field.  Follow the normal procedure for entering in a standard.

  • Formulate the waste as if it were just another color match and select a formula.

  • Weigh this formula up and make a proof of your ink and measure it in as a Trial by clicking on Instrument and selecting Measure Trial.

  • Run at least one correction on this batch to get it closer to the "standard."

  • Make a proof of the correction and measure it in as a Trial again.

  • Click on Database, then on Waste From Trial, the "Create Waste from Trial" dialog box appears.

  • Enter the waste name in the Ink Name field.

  • Enter your cost for the waste in the Cost field.

  • Enter a value in the Inventory field.

  • Enter a value in the Max Concentration field if desired.

  • Click on OK.

You have now created an accurate profile for your unknown waste without having to go through the involved process of step 1.  This method is a good alternative since it takes less time to set up your waste.
