Resetting the X-Rite 820

In December of 1993, the user interface of the 820 was modified. In particular, it became much easier to peform an instrument reset. Below are listed both methods, old and new. If you have firmware version v3C17 or higher, the new reset applies, otherwise use the old technique. Note: In either case all stored data will be erased.

Master Reset v3C17 or higher (December 17, 1993):

  1. Press and HOLD the "read" key.
  2. While HOLDING the "read" key, simultaneously press and HOLD the "dbase" key.
  3. In about 5 seconds the 820 will prompt, "Master Preset Entire 820 Memory y / n?"
  4. Answer "yes". The instrument will then, channel by channel, erase and preset memory.
  5. Instrument will return to normal operation on conclusion.

Master Reset prior to v3C17 (before December 17, 1993):

  1. Press and HOLD the "read" key.
  2. While HOLDING the "read" key, simultaneously press and HOLD all four of the lower control keys. This isn't easy as your fingers are all different lengths. It may take several tries to get it right.
  3. In about 5 seconds the 820 will prompt, "Master Preset Entire 820 Memory y / n?"
  4. Answer "yes". The instrument will then, channel by channel, erase and preset memory.
  5. Instrument will return to normal operation on conclusion.
