USB Device Could Not Be Found on Windows Vista

This document outlines a step-by-step procedure to assist the customer with a USB device driver problem on Windows Vista. This could be helpful for any X-Rite USB instruments using the XrUsb.sys driver file.

The following error (or similar) might occur when attempting to calibrate a monitor with an i1 Display 2 instrument if it's device driver is not installed properly:

You will need to navigate to the "Device Manager". To do so follow these instructions

  1. Click on the Windows icon in the lower left hand corner of your monitor (in older version of Windows this button was labeled "Start").

  2. The following menu will appear, click on "Control Panel"

  3. If your Control Panel looks like the image below, click on "Classic View"

  4. Double click on the "System" icon

  5. Click on "Device Manager"

If the instrument driver is not properly installed, you will find the instrument somewhere in the list, with a yellow exclamation point over the icon. In the example below, the instrument appears under the heading "Other devices".

To correctly load the driver follow these instructions:

  1. Right click on the improperly installed device, left click on "Uninstall", and then select "OK" in the "Confirm Device Removal" window to remove the device.

  1. Unplug the instrumentUSB cable, wait a moment, and then reconnect the USB cable to the PC

  2. The following window will appear:

  1. Select "Locate and install driver software"

  2. Select "Install this driver software anyway" if you see the following"Windows Security"window:

  1. The wizard will install the driver. When complete the instrument will appear without the yellow exclamation point. In the example shown below, the instrument appears under the heading "GretagMacbeth Device", in other cases the instrument will appear under the heading "Universal Serial Bus controllers"
