How to Use the Color Analysis Feature - ShadeVision

Color Analysis of an Individual Tooth

The color analysis window provides a way to see value, hue, and chroma features of an individual tooth. A set of tabs allows you to view the image for each feature.  Open ShadeVision software and open a work order.

Group Editor screen

  1. From the Data Viewer Group Editor screen select the Color Analysis Tool icon, it's the red, yellow, green, blue wheel icon.
  2. Select the tooth to view value, hue, chroma maps.

The selected shade guide, average dentin shade, and tooth ID for the tooth are shown near the top of the window. Below that, each tab displays the particular feature in the color analysis of that tooth.

In each tab, the following elements are consistent:

  • graphical display of the mapped color data, using 2 gradient bars

  1. The narrow left bar shows the entire possible range of value, hue, or chroma, depending on which tab you are viewing.

  2. A white bracket indicates where the entire current shade guide lies within that range.

  3. A black bracket indicates where the active tooth area lies within the same range.

  4. The wider "exploded" bar shows the entire range of colors in the tooth.

  5. A tooth icon indicates the average dentin color in relation to . . .

  6. . . . the closest dentin shade match in the selected shade guide.

Value tab

The Value tab shows the entire value range in the narrow left gradient. In the "exploded" gradient bar, only the range of values contained in the tooth are shown. The range of mapped values moves from black to white to represent areas that are "darker" (lesser value) or "brighter" (greater value). The value of the average dentin shade is indicated with a tooth icon. You can use this starting point to see the relative value difference between this point and the other mapped regions.

Hue tab

The Hue tab shows the entire hue range in the narrow left gradient. In the "exploded" gradient bar, only the range of hues contained in the tooth are shown. The hue range is designed to show how mapped hues in the tooth are either more red or more yellow relative to the average dentin shade, shown as white. All other mapped shades in the tooth are shown as either more red or more yellow than this average shade.

Chroma tab

The Chroma tab shows the entire chroma range in the narrow left gradient. In the "exploded" gradient bar, only the range of chroma contained in the tooth are shown. The chroma range is mapped from white to red-brown to represent areas that are "weaker" (lesser chroma) or "stronger" (greater chroma). The chroma of the average dentin is indicated with a tooth icon. You can use this starting point to see the relative chroma difference between this point and the other mapped regions.

Managing the windows

While the Group Editor is displayed, you can select as many individual teeth for color analysis as you like. Each color analysis window can be opened and closed as needed. When you close the Group Editor window, all open color analysis windows close automatically.
