Connecting the Color Matching Instrument

Symptom:
When launching or running ColorDesigner an error with communicating with Instrument.

Color Designer has the ability to connect your spectrophotometer (CF57U, CFS57U, RM400, CA22, or iVue) to either a USB (Univerisal Serial Bus) or a Serial (9-pin cable) interface. In either case, the setup of the software must communicate the proper COM port with the correct interface cable.

When trying to verify that a instrument is connected, the best method to verify is through Calibration in the software.  If the software can initiate the calibration process, the instrument is fully functional.

In Color Designer v10.0 and newer versions:

  1. Click the Housekeeping Button from the Main Menu of ColorDesigner
  2. Then Enter the Password 1234
  3. Click on the Setup Button on the Right side of the Screen
  4. Click on the Instruments Button in the Center of the Screen
  5. On the right side of the screen, you should see Tethered Instrument.
  6. Click on the down arrow and scroll down to find your instrument in the list
  7. After a few minutes of Attempting to Establish a Connection, the software should find your instrument.
  8. If it still will not connect, select the plug with the red circle around it to reset and then reselect your instrument.

In Color Designer v7.70 and older versions:

  1. Click the Housekeeping Button from the Main Menu of ColorDesigner
  2. Then Enter the Password 1234
  3. Click on the Setup Button
  4. Click on the Instruments Button
  5. On the right side of the screen, you should will see Desktop Instrument.
  6. When connecting the Desktop instrument using USB, set Desktop Instrument Port to 3 or 4, Portable to None.
  7. When connecting the Desktop instrument using Serial, set Desktop Instrument Port to 1 or 2, Portable to None.
  8. If it still will not connect, select None to reset and then reselect the correct port.

The Software will attempt to Connect the Instrument to the associated Port assigned. If you are able to calibrate, follow the appropriate steps necessary.

If this is not successful, change the Instrument cable to Serial, if a USB cable was used before. Make sure only one cable is attached to Instrument and repeat the steps to connect to a different port.
